Here's a great page from the Doing What Works federal resource. This page has several videos demonstrating ways to get students thinking more deeply at a variety of grades. The videos show teachers, students, and experts explaining how to make instruction more engaging by asking students to think more deeply. Please take note of the resources and planning tools at the bottom right, under the video links. Also, click on the "Learn What Works" tab in the upper menu bar to get more info.
